The great depression...

After spending a week taking care of my grandparents. I cant help to think of how they eat and how they were taught. A little history my grandparents. They grew up in the hills of Kentucky. Yes bootleggers and wondering kids with farmer bibs, and no shoes type.

I am amazed of the stories of their childhoods about great grandparents trying to shoot others for stealing chickens etc.. Who would of thought this how much as a society has changed. Recently watched the movie lawless gave a good impression of that era.

Trying to watch my weight. They keep insisting on eating bean soup with salted ham. Lunch dinner and sometimes breakfast. I have to stop and I catch myself realizing that they grew up in a era where they ate everything to the last morsel. This week has been a battle to help them realize that it may not be healthy to eat some expired foods, and how many times you can recook items before it spoils.

This experience has made me very humble for the times that I live in and the conveniences we have. Makes me wonder if we had a natural break down in modern society who would survive and who would not, just for the element of what we eat and how we eat it. I think most people dont have these basic skills to determine what is eatable and not. hmm... my food 4 thought.
